It’s hard to call yourself a writer if you don’t, you know, write. So, I embarked on this project for a couple of reasons: First, to keep my skills sharp. I’ve been writing for decades, starting with fanfiction and now including original fiction but with various things going on in my offline life, I’ve drifted away from it. I suppose to some people, writing–let’s say serializing–my version of the Courier’s tale may seem like a step back after all, why write it when you can play it? But if that were true, fanfiction wouldn’t be the thriving enterprise it is. I’d put a few hundred hours into New Vegas myself, complete with a variety of mods, when I decided I wanted to do something different with this story. There’s a robust modding community that’s still very active more than ten years later. The games are fun, easy to get into, and complex enough to provide, quite literally, hundreds of hours of entertainment. Fallout 3 and New Vegas tell some of the most pivotal stories in the Fallout universe, and they tell them well. There’s a sweet spot here where accessibility and great storytelling come together. I get slammed by hardcore classic-era fans for not being into the original games, and I get misunderstanding from the later fans who came in on Fallout 4 and Fallout ’76, who don’t really know what they missed.īut it’s not a bad place to be. As a result, my “era”, if you will, is firmly locked in at Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. But, I came in just before Fallout 4 was released, and I had no way to play it–no PS4, no XBox One, no gaming PC. I’m too late to have appreciated the original games from Interplay/Black Isle, the isometric turn-based roleplaying games. As a fan, that makes for awkward times, I admit.

I’m a latecomer to the Fallout series of video games. I said in the last post that I would talk a bit more about what I want to accomplish with The Courier’s Tale.
